PATH TO CAREER SUCCESS
What is the 3×3×3 method?
The key to a fulfilling career – and life – is growth. And what we know is that growth happens when we can fully engage with the problems we face or allow ourselves to reflect on our desired outcomes.
Maybe you are still in the process of immigrating to Canada. Maybe you’re a newcomer trying to build a career. Regardless of where you are, there is something you can start learning today that could open up new opportunities.
When talking about intentional learning, McKinsey & Company, a global management and consulting firm, talks about the 3x3x3 approach, a heuristic for designing professional learning.
🎯 3 Goals
The idea is to have no more than 3 goals at a time. Too many goals will scatter your focus and make you less likely to succeed. To get started, write down a list of interests or issues you’re facing. Next, reflect on which learning goals would have the most significant impact on your life and career.
📅 3 Months
It’s also important to have a time limitation to create a sense of urgency. 3 months gives you enough time for trial and error as you’re building habits, and it fits into the quarter system of the business world.
👥 3 People
Isn’t it interesting how much easier it is to break promises to ourselves than others? To increase your chances of success (and make the process more fun) find yourself 3 accountability partners. These can be other newcomers to Canada, trusted friends, or mentors.
🍁 What are some suggested development goals for newcomers to Canada?
Set a goal to improve your English or French proficiency by enrolling in language courses or joining language exchange groups.
Identify key certifications or licenses required in your field in Canada. Allocate time over the next three months to prepare for exams or complete necessary coursework, leveraging support from industry mentors or study groups.
Establish a goal to expand your professional network by attending networking events or connecting with Canadian professionals on LinkedIn.

✅ Master the Art of Emailing
Is there anything worse than receiving a long, confusing email? One common mistake is crafting overly detailed messages that bury the main action or request.
To address this, consider using the BLUF framework—Bottom Line Up Front—a standard in U.S. military communication that ensures messages are direct and concise. This means that the action is the first part of the message.
Let’s compare two approaches: one overly detailed message and one using the BLUF method.
❌ Overly Detailed:
Dear Team,
I trust this email finds you well. As we approach the end of the month, I would like to draw your attention to an important matter concerning the submission of proposals. As part of our ongoing efforts to advance our initiatives, we kindly request that all finalized proposal documents be meticulously reviewed and submitted by this Friday, July 26th, before the close of business at 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time. It is imperative that we adhere to this timeline to ensure that our efforts align with the broader organizational goals and objectives. Your cooperation in this regard is greatly appreciated.
✅ BLUF Method:
Dear Team,
I hope this message finds you well. Please note that the deadline for submitting proposals is this Friday, July 26th, at 5:00 PM EST. Kindly ensure all finalized documents are uploaded to the shared drive by that time.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
