AI guide for your Canadian job search

Mastering active listening to strengthen professional relationships

“If you can't describe what you are doing as a process, you don't know what you're doing.”

PATH TO CAREER SUCCESS
AI guide for your Canadian job search

Applying for jobs can be time-consuming, and not all job search tasks produce equally valuable outcomes. New Canadians highlights career coach David Mendoza’s advice on using AI to streamline some of these tasks. By automating routine activities, job seekers can focus on high-impact strategies, like networking, that deliver the most significant results.

📄🤖 Crafting Effective Resumes:

Prompt for Creating a Concise Introduction: “Act as an expert resume writer and refine my resume introduction to better match the job posting. Include the following elements [insert elements here].”

Prompt for Enhancing Bullet Points: “Transform these resume bullet points into accomplishment statements that emphasize the impact of the work performed.”

🎤🤖 Preparing for Job Interviews:

Prompt for Anticipating Interview Questions: “Based on this job description [insert job description], generate 10 potential interview questions for this role.”

Prompt for Generating Technical and Behavioural Questions: “Provide 5 technical questions and 5 behavioural questions that could be asked during an interview for this position.”

🤖  David’s key takeaways:

AI can help tailor your resume to match job descriptions more effectively, increasing the chances of it passing through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and getting seen by human recruiters.

While AI can provide valuable support, it’s important to review and personalize the output to ensure it accurately reflects your achievements and skills. AI is a tool to enhance, not replace, personal effort.

LEARN THE LINGO
Mastering Active Listening to Deepen Professional Relationships

When developing communication skills, we often focus on storytelling, presentation, or speaking more assertively. However, active listening is a crucial yet often overlooked skill.

What is active listening? It means showing the speaker that they’ve been heard. This encourages them to share more and helps you better understand and process the information. (Bonus: If you're learning English, active listening can also help you better grasp the conversation and slow down its pace.)

Key features of active listening:

  • Paraphrasing: Restate the speaker’s words to confirm understanding.
“So, if I’m hearing you correctly, the main challenge is managing the timelines?”

  • Clarifying Questions: Ask for more details to stay engaged.
“Can you tell me more about how that process works?”

  • Acknowledging Statements: Use short phrases or non-verbal cues to show you're listening.
I see,” “That’s interesting,” or a simple nod.

  • Acknowledging Emotions: Empathize by recognizing the speaker’s feelings.
“It sounds like you’ve been under a lot of pressure.”

🎯 Challenge: Next time you're networking, focus on being genuinely interested in the other person. Ask about their passion projects, goals, or motivations, and notice how much deeper the connection becomes.
