Embarking on a career journey can be both exciting and overwhelming. Here are clear steps to help you navigate your choices and find a career that not only pays the bills but also puts a smile on your face.

Self-Reflection
Start by taking a deep dive into your own interests, values, and skills. Consider what activities bring you joy and fulfillment.

Assess Your Skills, Talents and Passions:
Evaluate your skill set objectively.  Recognizing your strengths and weaknesses can guide you towards careers that leverage your abilities and allow for growth.

Passion is also a driving force in any successful career. Exploring your passions can lead you to a career that doesn't just pay the bills but also brings you a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Research and Information Gathering:
Understanding the day-to-day responsibilities, workplace culture, and growth opportunities can help you make informed decisions.

Set Clear Goals:
Define your short-term and long-term career goals. Having a clear vision can guide you in choosing a career that aligns with your aspirations.

Consider Lifestyle Factors:
Think about the lifestyle you envision for yourself. Consider your preferred work environment, work-life balance, and any other factors that contribute to your overall well-being.

Adaptability and Flexibility:
Be open to new opportunities and remain adaptable to changes in the job market. Continuous learning and development will empower you to navigate the dynamic nature of today's professional landscape.

Choosing the right career is a personal journey that requires careful consideration of your unique qualities and aspirations. By taking the time to reflect, research, and seek guidance, you can pave the way for a fulfilling and successful career that aligns with your true self.

LEARN THE LINGO
How to Use Powerful Verbs

Ready to add to your language learning toolkit? Let’s talk about verb collocations!

What exactly are verb collocations? They’re dance partners in language — words that naturally move together.

Learning common verb collocations in the workplace will not only help you feel more confident in your professional conversation, but it can also help increase your accuracy scores on the IELTS speaking exam. (There’s also the added benefit that it’s easier to study vocabulary in chunks.)

Make a Decision

Example:  After much deliberation, she made the decision to pursue a new career path.

Common mistake: In English, you "make" decisions rather than "take " them (unlike French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian).

Why "Make" Decisions?

Think of decision-making as a creative act — where each choice is crafted and shaped with intention, much like an artist creating a masterpiece — rather than something you grab or hold.

Some other collocations with “Make”

  • Make progress

  • Make adjustments

  • Make an impact

  • Make a career move

Set Goals

Example: As a proactive approach to career development, he set ambitious goals for himself.

Common mistake: Saying “fix goals” instead of “set goals”. This is possibly influenced by a false cognate or false friend, like in French where “fixer” in “fixer des objectifs” means to make something permanent. It's important to note that in English, the verb “fix” refers to repairing something, not establishing it permanently.

Why "Set" Goals?

The verb "set" implies a conscious decision to achieve specific objectives. Picture it like engraving your goals in stone — setting them in a way that indicates lasting and enduring commitment. It carries a sense of permanence, indicating that goals are not just momentarily chosen but are intended to endure.

Some other collocations with “Set”

  • Set objectives

  • Set targets

  • Set milestones

  • Set priorities
